Interactive Mapping

The Interactive Mapping Display session will provide an opportunity for delegates to interactively display project ideas or project results using interactive mapping tools (Google Earth and/or ArcGIS Explorer). In order to increase our understanding of the diversity of places, studies and caribou initiatives across the North, we will set up computer stations to give attendees a more hands on experience of viewing and presenting their data. Three computers with wide monitors will be set up for the duration of the Workshop. Each computer will have Google Earth, ArcGIS Explorer, Adobe Reader and Windows Media Player installed.

Workshop participants interested in using the Interactive Mapping Display are invited to give a short 10 minute presentation of their work on Tuesday night or simply present their project more informally at other times during the Workshop. We hope this will be an alternate means by which delegates both discuss synergies between projects and interact professionally and socially in a less formal workshop setting.

If you are not familiar with the concept of an Interactive Mapping Display, here is an example Google Earth KMZ file using some Manitoba caribou data.

Please note that KML/KMZ files can be created using Google Earth Professional from shapefiles, image files, photos and videos. ArcGIS Desktop can also be used to create Google Earth files using the Layer To KML tool or the free Export to KML 2.5.4 ArcScript. If Google Earth is not already installed on your computer, you can download the free version from http://earth.google.com. ArcGIS Explorer can also be used to create Google Earth files or ArcGIS Explorer mapping files (NMF) directly from geodatabases, shapefiles, raster data, etc. The ArcGIS Explorer software is also free and can be downloaded from http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/explorer/index.html.

We ask you to submit a summary of your presentation for inclusion in the Workshop Program and data for the Interactive Mapping Display by completing this form. Data submitted using the online form will be placed on all Interactive Display computers for the duration of the Workshop.  And,

  • the data will not be released to anyone for any reason,
  • a reference to the author will be provided on request,
  • the display computers will be monitored at all times by a conference representative,
  • the data files will be deleted at the end of the conference,
  • authors are encouraged to provide data in KML/KMZ format with minimal attribute information attached so as to keep file sizes small; and,
  • authors with highly sensitive spatial and/or attribute data are encouraged to use USB memory sticks for storage so that the information may be displayed but not transferred to the conference computers.

If you need assistance completing the online Interactive Mapping Display Form or in submitting data files, please contact Sonesinh Keobouasone at the Natural Resource Institute (sonesinh@gmail.com), Tony Viveiros at Manitoba Conservation (Antonio.Viveiros@gov.mb.ca) or Tom Naughten at Parks Canada (Tom.Naughten@pc.gc.ca).
